Phil Hill, born in Miami, Florida, became America's first Grand Prix Champion in 1961. When a crash during the Italian Grand Prix killed Ferrari team-mate von Trips and fifteen spectators Hill won the race and clinched the championship. However, in the aftermath of the tragedy Ferrari stood down from the final race in the United States, depriving Hill of the opportunity to participate in his home race at Watkins Glen as the newly crowned World Champion. He would leave Ferrari at the end of 1962 and race on with various other teams until retirement in 1967. Phil Hill also won the Le Mans 24 Hours, as a works Ferrari driver, achieving three victories alongside Olivier Gendebien in 1958, 1961, the same year as his Grand Prix Championship and the following year in 1962. Hill drove several camera fitted racing cars during this period and captured footage for movies such as Grand Prix. Phil Hill was a noted photographer as well but will always be remembered for his smooth style and mastery of both the Sports Car and Grand Prix disciplines for the Scuderia.
