RUSSELL THAW'S GEE BEE R2
This is a freehand original watercolour by Simon Read. The Granville Brothers gained their place in the record books with success at a series of cross country and pylon air races in the early 1930's. Aviation pioneer and war hero James Doolittle cut his teeth with the Gee Bees, as did former child actor Russell Thaw, who also flew in World War II and later as test pilot for Douglas. This is Thaw's 1933 Cleveland Air Race Gee Bee R2, which withdrew following an oil leak after a dominant early performance.
